The Nebraska Institute of Forensic Sciences, Inc. has established an accredited Certificate Program in Forensic Science for students in the healthcare and allied services. Students will be drawn from many disciplines, including, but not limited to, law enforcement, law, medicine, nursing, laboratory sciences, etc.
The program will enable the students and graduates of the program to develop foundational knowledge and practical skills in the forensic sciences. Hence the Certificate is a useful starting point for individuals contemplating or considering a forensic science career.
To obtain the Certificate in Forensic Science the student will engage in a 12 month course of study segmented into 8 modules over an 8 month period, follwed by 4 months of internship / practicum. Four (4.0) Continuing Education Units
(CEUs) will be awarded upon successful completion of each of the 8 modules, each consisting of lectures, quizzes, and assignments with or without laboratory demonstrations. An additional sixteen (16.0) CEUs will be awarded upon completion of a four-month forensic science internship /practicum in the area that meets the student’s desire or interests. For the internship program the student will study and work under the supervision of a mentor in such settings as an accredited City/County/State Crime Laboratory, Federal Bureau of Investigation, approved Medical Examiner’s Office or Coroner’s Office or equivalent institution approved by the Board of Directors / Faculty of Nebraska Institute of Forensic Sciences, Inc.
